The material your sign is made from decides how good it looks, how long it lasts, and what it costs. With the British weather throwing rain, frost and UV at your sign year-round, choosing the right material matters. Here's how the main options compare.
Aluminium composite (ACM / Dibond)
A lightweight aluminium-and-polyethylene panel that's become the workhorse of exterior signage. Pros: rigid, weatherproof, won't rust, takes printed or vinyl graphics beautifully, and is cost-effective. Best for: fascia signs, flat panels and most shopfronts. This is our go-to for durable, great-value exterior signage.
Acrylic
A premium, glossy plastic that looks high-end and works brilliantly with illumination. Pros: clean modern finish, excellent for face-lit signs and layered 3D logos. Considerations: costs more than ACM and is best specified at the right thickness for the job. Best for: illuminated signs, reception logos, premium fascias.
Built-up letters (aluminium / stainless steel)
Individually fabricated 3D letters — the premium end of signage. Pros: serious kerb appeal, depth and shadow, can be halo- or face-illuminated, extremely durable. Considerations: higher cost reflecting the fabrication involved. Best for: corporate frontages, hotels, flagship stores.
Foamex (PVC foam board)
A lightweight, economical rigid board. Pros: cheap, easy to cut to shape, fine for short-to-medium-term exterior use. Considerations: not as durable or premium as ACM or acrylic for permanent signage. Best for: budget signs, temporary displays, internal signage.
Vinyl and graphics
Not a panel but a finish — printed or cut vinyl is applied to panels, windows and vehicles. Pros: full colour, any design, can be removed/updated. Best for: window graphics, vehicle livery, and adding branding to ACM or acrylic.
So which should you choose?
For most outdoor shop signs, ACM offers the best balance of durability, looks and cost. Step up to acrylic or built-up letters when you want a premium, illuminated finish. The right answer depends on your brand, budget and location — which is exactly what our free survey is for.
